ST ALPHONSA MISSION REGION, SANGLI
Sangli Mission is a Mission region in the Diocese of Kalyan entrusted to The Missionary Society of St. Thomas the Apostle (MST) in 1990 for evangelization. This region comprises of four civil districts of Maharashtra State; viz. Sangli, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. At present Alphonsa regions is coextensive with Syro-Malabar diocese in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.
Sharing the missionary vision of MST and the Kalyan diocese, Sangli Mission is committed to spread the good news of Jesus through various its apostolates. In order to coordinate the various developmental and humanitarian activities a legal body called Sangli Mission Society was registered in 1993. All the social service activities are carried out through this Society.
Originally limited to the four civil districts of Southern Maharashtra, viz. Sangli, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg of the eparchy of Kalyan, the area of St Alphonsa Region, Sangli today is extended to the Federal State of Goa and four civil districts of North Western Karnataka, viz. Belgaum, Bagalkot, Raichur and Bijapur of the eparchy of Shamshabad, and it is co-extensive with all other Syro-Malabar eparchies in the states of Maharashtra (except the civil district of Nagpur) and Gujarat.
The Sangli Mission Society
The Sangli Mission Society (SMS) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 1990 with the purpose of empowering the poor, marginalized and the needy persons in the society. It is a Registered charitable Society (Mah /3863/Sangli &F/3827Sangli) under both Societies Registration Act 1860 and Mumbai Public Trust Act 1950.
Since from the inception, Sangli Mission Society has been engaged in various activities like formal education, special education, community-based rehabilitation, community development, women empowerment, health care, environmental protection, and promotion of sustainable agriculture, skill development, livelihood programs etc. to create an inclusive and just society.
